A traffic jam means a long line of vehicles standing on the road without moving. It is a very common problem in Bangladesh, especially in Dhaka. Hundreds of buses, trucks, cars, rickshaws and motorcycles get stuck on the roads every day. The main causes of traffic jam are too many vehicles on narrow roads, breaking of traffic rules, unplanned roads and wrong parking. When the office time and school time start, the jam becomes very serious. People have to sit inside buses for hours and reach their offices very late. Students miss their classes, patients cannot reach hospitals in time, and ambulances and fire engines cannot move easily. The jam also wastes our valuable time, fuel and money. The air becomes polluted because of the smoke of waiting vehicles. The traffic police try their best, but the number of vehicles is too high. To solve this problem, we need wider roads, better planning, good public transport and strict traffic rules. Every citizen should follow the rules of the road. If we all cooperate, the traffic jam in Bangladesh can be reduced greatly.

Wrong parking, loading and unloading of goods on the road, broken buses stopping in the middle of the road, and unplanned construction work also create jams. During the rainy season, waterlogging makes the problem even worse.

The effects of traffic jam are very bad. Students cannot reach their schools and coaching centres in time. Office workers reach late and lose their working hours. Sick people suffer a lot because ambulances cannot pass quickly. A pregnant woman or a seriously injured patient may even lose life on the way to the hospital. Traffic jam also causes a huge waste of fuel, time and money. The standing vehicles spread smoke and make the air polluted. The frustration of the passengers often causes quarrels and bad temper.

The government has taken some steps, such as building flyovers, metros and expressways. The metro rail has already brought some relief in Dhaka. Still, the problem is far from solved. To remove traffic jam, we need wide roads, separate lanes for different vehicles, an improved public transport system and strict enforcement of traffic rules. Awareness among drivers and pedestrians is also necessary. If the authorities and the people work together, we can reduce the traffic jam in Bangladesh to a great extent.
