Mother Teresa is known all over the world as a saint of the poor. She was born on 26 August 1910 in Skopje, which is now in North Macedonia. Her real name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. She became a nun and came to India to serve the people. She started her life of service in Kolkata, the city of joy. At that time many poor people were sick and dying on the streets. Mother Teresa could not bear to see their suffering. She left her comfortable life in the convent and began to help them with her own hands. She opened a home called Nirmal Hriday where dying people could spend their last days with care and love. She also opened a home for orphan children called Shishu Bhavan. Soon many other women joined her, and her group became known as the Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa served the poorest people without any selfish desire. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her wonderful work. She passed away on 5 September 1997, but her work still continues. Mother Teresa teaches us that we should love every human being and help the poor whenever we can.

In 1948 she received permission from the pope to work independently, and she started visiting the slums of Kolkata. She wore a simple white sari with a blue border, washed the wounds of dying people and gave food to starving children. In 1950 she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious order that grew into a worldwide organization with homes for the dying, orphanages and leper colonies. She opened Nirmal Hriday to shelter the dying and Shishu Bhavan for orphan children. Her work spread beyond India to more than a hundred countries. She received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1962 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She accepted these awards not for herself but for the poor and helpless people of the world. Mother Teresa passed away on 5 September 1997 and was declared a saint by the Catholic Church in 2016. Her life is a shining example of love, sacrifice and service, and she remains an inspiration for every student who wants to serve humanity.
