A book fair is a large gathering where many books are displayed and sold. It is a festival for book lovers. In Bangladesh, the biggest book fair is held in Dhaka every year in the month of February, on the ground of Bangla Academy. It is called the Ekushey Boi Mela, and it reminds us of the martyrs of the Language Movement. Many publishers set up their stalls in the fair, and the stalls are decorated with colourful banners. Books on all subjects are found there, such as stories, poems, novels, science, history and books for children. Hundreds of people visit the fair every day. Students, teachers, writers and book lovers come from far and near. Famous writers come to the fair to meet their readers and sign their books. I visited the book fair last year with my father. I walked from stall to stall and bought two storybooks and a book on general knowledge. The fair was crowded, but everything was arranged neatly. The book fair gives us the chance to see all the new books at one place and teaches us to love books. It is truly a beautiful festival of knowledge and joy.

In Bangladesh, the most famous book fair is the Ekushey Boi Mela, which is held every year in the month of February on the premises of the Bangla Academy in Dhaka. This fair is very special to us, because it is organized to pay tribute to the martyrs of the Language Movement of 1952, and it reminds every Bengali of the great sacrifice made for our mother tongue. The fair is usually opened in the first week of February and continues for the whole month. Hundreds of publishers, big and small, set up their stalls, and the whole ground becomes a sea of books. The stalls are decorated with colourful posters, banners and photographs of famous writers. One can find books on almost every subject under the sun, such as fiction, poetry, science, history, religion, politics, travel and books specially written for children. Every day thousands of people visit the fair. Young students come with their friends, and old book lovers come with their families, while famous writers come to meet their readers, give autographs and take part in discussions. I visited the Ekushey Boi Mela last year, and the scene was wonderful. There was a great rush everywhere, and the air was filled with the smell of new books. I spent the whole afternoon going from stall to stall, and at last I bought a collection of short stories, a book on science for children and a dictionary. The book fair is very useful for us in many ways. It helps new writers to publish their first books, it gives readers the chance to see all the new books of the year at one place and, above all, it spreads the habit of reading among the people. A book fair teaches us that books are our best friends, and I believe every town should arrange such a fair every year.
