Short Paragraph on Arsenic Pollution

Arsenic pollution is a serious problem in Bangladesh. Arsenic is a poison that is found naturally in the soil. In many areas, the water of tube-wells contains arsenic. Many years ago, people of Bangladesh began to depend on tube-well water for drinking. Later it was found that the water of many tube-wells was mixed with arsenic. This arsenic comes from the underground soil. People who drink this water for a long time fall sick. The first sign of arsenic poisoning is a change in the colour of the skin. White or dark spots appear on the hands, feet, and body. After some time the skin becomes hard and painful. If a person drinks arsenic water for many years, the disease becomes dangerous and can even cause death. Many villages in Bangladesh are badly affected by arsenic pollution. The government and different organisations have tested the tube-wells and marked the dangerous ones. People are advised to drink water only from safe tube-wells. We should also use rain water or deep tube-well water. Arsenic pollution can be stopped if all of us work together.

The patient feels weak, and in serious cases the disease can damage the internal organs and lead to death. Children and old people suffer the most. Many districts of Bangladesh, especially the southern and western parts, are affected by arsenic pollution. Crops are also harmed because arsenic water is sometimes used for irrigation. The rice plants take arsenic from the water and soil, and this poison enters our body through food as well. So arsenic pollution does not only affect drinking water; it affects our whole food chain. The government and different non-government organisations have tested the tube-wells and painted the unsafe ones red. People are now advised to drink water from safe tube-wells. Deep tube-well water, rain water, and filtered water are safer. It is also important to check the tube-well water in a laboratory from time to time. Arsenic pollution is a silent killer because it harms us slowly without any sudden sign. We must be careful about the water we drink. If we all choose safe water and spread awareness in our villages, we can save many lives from arsenic pollution.
