Essay on How I Spent My Holidays at Home

The last school holidays were very special to me because I spent most of them at home. Our school closed for two weeks after the annual examination. I had a plan to go to my grandmother’s village house, but my father had some work, so we stayed at home. At first I was a little sad. But very soon I found many things to enjoy at home. I woke up late every morning, which was a great pleasure. Then I helped my mother in her daily work. I went to the market with my father and learned how to buy vegetables. In the afternoon I read storybooks and comics. I also revised my lessons so that I would not forget them. In the evening I played badminton with my younger brother in the courtyard. I watched television and listened to music at night. One day I helped my mother to make sweets, and it was great fun. My holidays at home were not costly, but they were full of happiness. I learned that we can enjoy ourselves at home if we use our time well.

Every year our school closes for some days, and we get holidays. Last year I spent my winter holidays at home, and those days still make me smile. At first I wanted to go to my uncle’s house in the town, but my parents could not make time. So we decided to stay at home and enjoy ourselves there. On the first morning I slept till nine o’clock, which I never do on school days. When I woke up, my mother had already made hot food for breakfast. The whole house felt warm and peaceful.

I spent my days in a simple but happy way. Every morning I helped my mother in the kitchen. I washed the vegetables and set the table. In the afternoon I sat in the sun with a storybook and read for an hour. I had a list of books from the school library, and I finished three of them during the holidays. I also practised my English by writing a short diary every day. My father took me to the market on two days, and I learned how to choose fresh fish and vegetables. In the evening my brother and I played badminton in the courtyard. Sometimes our neighbours joined us, and the games became very exciting. On some evenings mother made pitha and hot tea, and we all sat together and talked about funny old stories. We watched television and solved puzzles together at night. I also watered the garden plants and fed the hens, which was my small duty.

When the school reopened, I felt that I had spent the best holidays of my life. I did not go anywhere, but I was never bored. I learned that holidays do not need money or travel to be happy. I came back to school fresh and energetic, and I could answer many questions because I had revised my lessons at home. The love of family and the simple joys of home made my holidays beautiful.
